Download Firescar Maps

The fire information presented on the fire scar mapping page can be used within ArcGIS 8,9 or 10 (from ESRI). These instructions are for ArcGIS 10 but the older versions are only slightly different.

  • From the column titled "ESRI Shapefile" choose the required month. Save this file to a directory on your computer. It will probably have a name similar to "9709". It can be unzipped using WinZip.
  • Load ArcGIS 10 and select a blank template.
  • From the "File" menu, choose "Add Data" and then "Add Data..." and locate the file just saved. Grey shape(s) should appear in the view window.
  • If you wish to add a coordinate system, from the "View" menu, choose "Data Frame Properties...". Click on "custom" in the "Select a coordinate system:" window. Then click on the "New" button and select "Geographic Coordinate System...". A new window should appear called "New Geographic Coordinate System". Under "Datum" select "D_GDA_1994". Under "Name" enter a name such as "D_GDA_1994" and click on "Finish".
